![]() ![]() Then I strive to explain their work in ways that my pre-science writing self, and a broader audience, can understand. When I don’t understand what scientists are telling me, I keep asking questions. I’ve visited brain imaging labs and baboon troops in Kenya, and I’ve written about everything from Alzheimer’s to zebrafish. Pulled by my interest in health and the environment, I felt compelled to dig into science. No one was more surprised than I was! I had always been more interested in history (my major), literature, politics, languages-pretty much anything but biology and chemistry. ![]() Halfway through my career, after working in news magazines and freelancing for women’s magazines, I gravitated to writing primarily about science. Perhaps because of that, I only ever wanted to write non-fiction. I loved how McPhee could take almost anything and show you why it was interesting. I got hooked on the New Yorker and John McPhee in high school. I still love that, though I get to do it far less often. As a child, my favorite way to spend the day was lying on my bed with a book. From Lydia’s website: I have always been a reader and a lover of words. ![]() ![]() Since coming home I've also been reading some of the best travel writing about Croatia and, of course one of my most literate friends suggested I dip into Rebecca West's Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, an impossibly long (1100 pages) journey through old Yugoslavia in the 1940s. Once I've returned the ones I view most often seem to set off flares of irony or humor, and remind me somehow that I caught a moment and I can always return. ![]() Sometimes the images even announce how I felt or what I thought without the words. More than a few have prompted their requisite word count. Most aren't very good in the way photographers measure quality, but most serve my purpose: reminding me of where I have been and what the place looked like and what I experienced. Most of my photographs were taken while traveling. You do the math on what they say about every picture being worth a thousand words, or as Rod Stewart says, every picture tells a story. I am a writer but on my desk-top computer I have about 20,000 photos.
![]() There is no Hindu-Muslim divide, so much so that Shalimar marries the Pandit schoolteacher’s daughter with the blessings of the elders. The women of the village scorn the burqa. There is also the entertainment troupe, in which the anti-hero of the novel, Shalimar Noman, is an acrobat and clown. We read about the famed Kashmiri feast, the wazwan, in which the villagers are expert cooks, so that their fame has reached the Raja’s palace. There is at first an idyllic picture of the unravaged Kashmir, seen in microcosm in the neighbouring villages of Pachigam and Shirmal, where Kashmiriyat (Kashmiri-ness) blooms undisturbed. This portrayal is what hits the Indian reader hard, so that one emerges from it as from a holocaust. This is where the strength of the novel resides. The story, which is essentially a tale of love, betrayal, repentance and revenge, is not dependent on its Kashmiri setting. There are two aspects to this novel by Salman Rushdie: the portrayal of Kashmir, and the story of Shalimar, his wife Boonyi Kaul, and the American diplomat, Max Ophuls. ![]() ![]() Particularly enjoyable is the strong inclusion of the women’s stories that are often obscured or omitted from the contemporary histories of the time Sunnichild and Hiltrude are wonderful dramatic creations.
